A1307 Action

In a recent YouthQuestionnaire the number one issue in general and for every individual year group was the A1307, with even the 10 year olds stating this was their main concern.

The community has worked together to make sure that the road gets the attention it needs and there have been some improvements, although these sadly have always relied on road safety budgets which mean accidents have to occur for safety work to be undertaken.

Just before Christmas, Access 1307 finally heard the news that for the first time, Cambridgeshire County Council recognised the problems for residents, and put in a major bid to St Edmundsbury Borough Council for developers' monies for the A1307, stating junction improvements along the A1307 corridor were necessary to aid safe access and egress due to the increased traffic flows.

Local Conservatives believe that the County Council needs to be far more proactive in looking at the problems for vehicles at junctions and pedestrians crossing the road. Although it is good news that the County Council at last recognise the need to request developer funding, we feel it will be insufficient to solve all the problems and will be asking for a bid to be put to government.

On the 19th March 2009, the following press release was issued by Cambridgeshire County Council regarding speed cameras on the A1307.

The accident blighted A1307 could be benefitting from not one but two extra safety cameras. Cambridgeshire County Councillor Matt Bradney, who announced last year that he had secured one camera is now hopeful that a second one could also be put on the road.

Many of the accidents that happen on the A1307 occur to motorists driving at excess speed for the conditions.

He said: "When I took up my Cabinet post last year I said that the toll of accidents on the A1307 was unacceptable and that I would bring in or fast track a range of measures to reduce these crashes. At that time we were able to announce one extra safety camera for the road. Now I can say that we are looking at two. One camera will definitely be near the Hildersham crossroads and that we are now in the process of finalising the engineering practicalities of putting a second at Cardinals Green to help slow traffic near this new bus stop. These cameras are part of an overall package of improvements that we have brought to this road. We are investing heavily in improving safety on the A1307 from physical safety measures to education campaigns and working closely with our colleagues in the Police and partner authorities. Motorists must play their part and slow down on this road."
