BATCHELOR, John Dennis - Liberal Democrats 939
HICKFORD, Roger Keith - The Conservative Party 672
Turnout 45.2 %
A message from Roger
Thank you to everyone that voted. It was a great turn out with over 45% of the electorate voting. I thought there was a great buzz around the village. Of course a bigger thank you if you voted for me.
This was a tremendous result. For many years now there has only really been one party in Linton. To give some idea and to put it in perspective in 2006 the Lib Dems polled 947 and conservatives 499.
In 2004 the Lib Dems polled 60.71% of the vote and the conservatives 32.78%. As you can see, the Conservatives usually poll just over 50% of the Lib Dem vote. After the result yesterday there now really is an alternative choice for the village. I will continue the work already done. There will be regular newsletters and the web site will be kept up to date.
The next election will be the County Election next year. This is bigger with a total of 11 villages in our Division. The extra villages make a difference as in the last County election in 2005 the Lib Dems beat the Conservatives by only 275 votes out of a total number of votes cast of 5,257 (Total electorate 7,163). So taking into account the ground made yesterday, it should be a great battle.
Again....... A REALLY BIG THANK YOU TO EVERYONE
Regards
Roger Hickford
17th April 2008 – Coffee Afternoon with Cambridgeshire Police
Linton Parish Council held a successful meeting with the Police and the elderly residents today to discuss the recent spate of distraction burglaries.
Linton's new Community Police Officer, PC Rebecca Parkin attended the event and introduced herself to local residents.

10th April 2008 – Bus Pass Delays
Some residents have still not received their bus passes even though they applied for them many months ago. South Cambridgeshire District Council (SCDC) is apologising to residents who have not yet received their new bus passes.
They are doing all we can to get passes to people as soon as possible and have made contingency arrangements. Those residents who have not received their new bus pass can continue to use their current pass throughout Cambridgeshire until the new one arrives.
Those residents who applied for a new bus pass before mid-February and who do not receive their pass by early next week should call SCDC on 08450 450 500. SCDC will be pressing for all passes to be issued as soon as possible.
8th April 2008 – High Visibility Police Patrols
Police maintained a high visibility presence in Hildersham this evening with the aim of combating the recent spate of distraction burglaries. These patrols are greatly appreciated by the local community.
3rd April 2008 – Possible New Eco-Town for Hinxton
The shortlist of 15 sites for government drive eco-towns has been released and they will be finalised in the next six months. Ministers wants five of them built by 2016, with the other half completed by 2020. Hanley Grange, a new development at Hinxton has been proposed by Jarrow Investments for 8,000 homes plus a secondary school, five primary schools, a health centre, community facilities, shops and public spaces. This development could cause major problems for this area, particulary when traffic uses the A1307/B1052 as a quick route to Saffron Walden.
South Cambridgeshire District Council is greeting the news of a proposed eco-town in the district with concern.
The council has already expressed concerns about the impact any additional development would have on its challenging growth agenda. The district is currently planning for an ambitious number of new homes and fears any attempt to deliver more houses through an eco-town will be counter-productive, with additional new towns competing for resources with developments already committed in the district. It could also add to unsustainable commuting.
31st March 2008 – Another teenager killed on the A1307
On the evening of the 28th March another teenager from Linton Village College tragically lost her life on the A1307 after she was in collision with a vehicle at the Allington Terrace bus stop and our thoughts are with her family and friends. Within six months there will be a right hand turn and pedestrian refuge in this area but this is just too little too late. Local councillors will be meeting with CCC in the near future to discuss the improvements as well as growth on the road.
21st/22nd & 25th March 2008 – Anti Social Behaviour
Easter weekend and the holidays brought an increase in anti social behaviour with large groups of young people gathering and graffiti along with windows being broken in Horn Lane.
19th March 2008 – Linton has a new Neighbourhood Policing Constable
On the 7th April, if not before, the Linton area will have a new Neighbourhood Policing Constable. If was not possible for PC Mike Dyke to take up the role so he has been replaced by PC Rebecca Parkin.
18th March 2008 – Linton Neighbourhood Police Panel
On the evening of the 18th March, the third Linton Neighbourhood Police Panel was held at Linton Heights Junior School. The Police reported on progress made since the last meeting and residents talked about their concerns. Speeding in the villages was a particular issue and Bartlow is experiencing a high level of rat running vehicles from Haverhill. Speeding and illegal parking would remain an ongoing part of normal business for the Police and they will continue to undertake and report on speed checks.
Anti Social Behaviour continues to be a major issue and councillors were advised on how to consult with the young people in their villages.
The following priorities were set
1. Increased patrols around the neighbourhood in response to the current series of distraction burglaries whereby elderly residents are targeted.
2. ASB in Linton - focused around the Rec and the High Street.
3. ASB in Fulbourn - focused around Hinton Road and Thomas Road.
17th March 2008 – Another Distraction Burglary
Over recent months the Linton area has suffered from some nasty distraction burglaries on elderly residents. On Monday 17th March, a property in Mays Avenue Balsham was hit along with properties in Ashdon and Hadstock. A meeting in Linton has been arranged for the 17th April at 2pm in Linton Village Hall with the Police.
Detective Inspector Alan Page said: "These men are clearly targeting the elderly and vulnerable and have no thought for the stress they are putting their victims through. I would urge people to be vigilant and remain alert to the activities in their neighbourhood. If you note any suspicious activity, particularly around the homes of elderly residents, please report it to police immediately. Officers would never just let themselves into a person’s home if a burglary or similar incident had occurred next door. All police officers always carry identification on them at all times and the public have a right to ask to see it. If anyone is concerned someone trying to enter their home is not a genuine police officer they should call 999 immediately. In the meantime I would urge people to ensure their homes are kept locked and secure at all times. Investigations are ongoing into these offences, which police believe may be connected. Anyone with any information should contact DI Page at Parkside Police Station on 0845 456 456 4 or Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
21st Feb 2008 – Stansted/Luton Flight Paths Changes will affect Linton
Plans to move flight paths in and out of major British airports away from built up areas have been launched by the firm that manages UK air traffic. National Air Traffic Services says its plans would cut by 20% the number of people affected by noise from departing planes flying below 4,000ft (1,219m). The new flight paths could be in place by spring 2009 if the Civil Aviation Authority gives Nats the go-ahead. Nats says it will hold a 13-week consultation with people and organisations from this area.
These plans do effect Linton and its surrounding area and Linton Conservatives are currently reviewing the proposals – please send us our views. For more information please go to the website.

Feb 2008 – Linton Allotments
It seems incredible that Linton is surrounded by fields yet there are no allotments for Linton residents. Linton Parish Council have formed a working party with residents to try to identify sites that could be purchased or leased. It is very important that this matter is progressed so all residents are available to grow their own fruit and vegetables if they wish.
Feb 2008 – Kerbside Plastic Bottle Recycling
In February 2008 South Cambridgeshire District Council resolved to proceed with the introduction of a kerbside plastic bottle recycling collection service from October 2008 by adding plastic bottles to the Council’s existing kerbside dry recyclable scheme. There will be some incurred cost to the Council to achieve this but this will mean that less waste will be going to landfill and have environmental benefits.
