Emergency Procedures

All villages should have well-defined emergency procedures in place.   We are seeing extreme weather conditions more and more. Snow seems to bring the country to a standstill, despite the fact it has been forecast and we know it is coming. High winds and gales have become more common and a tornado damaged the Days Inn hotel in Haverhill last year. Sudden heat waves can cause distress for all, but in particular our young and elderly. There are floods now that never occurred a few years ago.

Linton is in particular danger because of its geographical location which causes flash floods that are very difficult to predict. SCDC recognises this fact and has supplies of sand and sandbags in five locations across South Cambridgeshire, Linton being one of them. However SCDC have stated that these supplies are not for the use of Linton’s residents to protect their homes, but for SCDC to use at their discretion and maybe for the emergency services to use in tackling the source of the flooding. But by then people’s homes are already being flooded.

SCDC are very reliant on the emergency services to attend incidents as they have no specific procedures in place. Also, response time is a big issue. Should an emergency occur during the weekend, response from SCDC would be significantly slower than during the week.

I would like there to be better liaison between SCDC and Parish Councils in the case of major emergency.

I feel it is important for each village to have defined emergency procedures together with access to supplies such as sand and sand bags, and I will be seeing what can be done about this.

HOW CAN YOU HELP?

An important part of a village resource is its residents, and I think every village should realise and recognise these people.  I am asking anyone who can help during a major emergency or crisis (such as a flood or hurricane) to consider volunteering their services. This could be anyone such as doctors and nurses, builders, electricians, plumbers etc., anyone with a vehicle that may be of use such as 4x4 drivers, and a pool of people that could be called upon at short notice (such as looking for a lost child).
